PTV Mobility Anwenderseminar 2023

In a world where climate change is advancing, cycling is becoming an increasingly important part of our mobility. However, there are challenges when it comes to integrating cycling into transportation planning.

Alex van Dulmen and Michael Cik presented at the PTV Mobility Anwenderseminar 2023 in Leipzig how mobile phone-based mobility analyses can support the integration of cycling traffic and thus contribute to a more sustainable mobility.

Sustainable mobility and cycling: Insights into research and the development of Invenium.

In a world where climate change is advancing, cycling is becoming an increasingly important part of our mobility. However, there are challenges when it comes to integrating cycling into transportation planning. The main problem lies in the lack of reliable data.

In a joint research project with the University of Technology of Graz and other partners, Invenium has investigated how to extract the distances traveled by bicycle from cell phone signaling data. This opens up completely new possibilities for analyzing and promoting cycling.

The results show that this method can be used to identify the correct mode of transport, in this case the bicycle, in around 80 percent of cases as early as 2019. Thanks to the expansion of the mobile network and technological advances, the quality of this data and the resulting analysis has even improved to date.

The enormous potential of mobile data in transport planning was once again underlined at this year’s PTV Mobility Anwenderseminar. Alex van Dulmen presented the practical findings and application examples from the research project to more than 150 traffic demand modelers. Research projects and the associated developments are a big step towards data-based traffic planning.
