Bleiburger Wiesenmarkt
The Bleiburg Wiesenmarkt > is a historic fair with a tradition spanning more than 600 years and is a fixed event in the annual calendar for many. Beginning on the first weekend of September, this cultural festival transforms the town of Bleiburg. But how can such a long-standing event benefit from modern mobility analytics?
Analyzing a 600-Year Tradition
The Bleiburg Wiesenmarkt is a traditional annual fair held in the town of Bleiburg, Austria. Taking place every year during the first weekend in September, it ranks among the country’s oldest and most renowned markets.
Combining the charm of a classic folk festival with a bustling trade fair, the Wiesenmarkt offers a broad array of goods from various vendors. First established in 1393 by Duke Albrecht to promote the town’s economic development, the event quickly evolved into a key gathering for traders and visitors from near and far.
The market features carnival rides, culinary specialties, cultural events, and traditional parades, attracting both local residents and international guests. More than just a regional economic driver, the Wiesenmarkt also serves as a social highlight that energizes the community and fosters connection.
Thanks to a comprehensive event analysis conducted by Event Insights, the entire Wiesenmarkt venue is now digitally monitored, providing detailed evaluations of the event weekend. These insights offer invaluable data that support the continuous development and strategic planning of the event.

Extensive Data. Exceptional Experience.
Since 2022, the City of Bleiburg has relied on Event Insights’ robust analytics to further enhance the Wiesenmarkt. The catalyst for adopting this modern approach was the set of new challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Due to the market’s free-entry policy and lack of a ticketing system, it was previously difficult to precisely measure visitor volume or understand crowd distribution. To address the evolving circumstances, a reliable data foundation was required — one that would also help ensure the Wiesenmarkt’s continued success for generations to come.
Customizing the Dashboard
A key requirement was the precise definition of the analysis area to ensure full coverage of the event grounds. Using the adaptable features of mobile network analysis, parameters could be tailored specifically to the unique characteristics of the Wiesenmarkt.
Arthur Ottowitz, who has served as the Wiesenmarkt’s market director since 1995, has led the event’s organization with great dedication. Working closely with local government and city officials, he also takes an active role in analyzing the event data. After two years of successful collaboration, he reflects positively:
“Through mobile-based mobility analytics, we’ve gained valuable insights into our event. These findings help us stay current in our planning and ensure that the Bleiburg Wiesenmarkt remains a highlight year after year.”

From Insight to Impact
The initial implementation of mobile-based analytics was driven by clearly defined goals. In response to pandemic-related challenges, historical data from 2019 was used as a benchmark. This forward-thinking approach made it possible to accurately measure visitor attendance — an essential step to comply with health regulations and guarantee smooth operations.
Importantly, this data-driven method helped avoid the need for a ticketing system, which would have added operational complexity and could have discouraged visitor turnout.Yet the true potential of this technology extends well beyond the pandemic. Since its introduction in 2022, mobility analytics has become a vital tool that delivers deep insights into visitor behavior and supports evidence-based strategic decision-making.The results are clear: even after a two-year hiatus, the Bleiburg Wiesenmarkt has lost none of its appeal. In fact, the event’s popularity remains as strong as ever.
Today, the mobility analysis system is an integral part of the Wiesenmarkt, providing reliable annual data that unlocks new possibilities for the organizers. Visitor flows can be analyzed and actively managed to continually enhance the overall experience. This includes detailed tracking of visitor dwell times and preferred arrival times — critical information for aligning services and programming with audience needs.
A practical example: analysis of the visitor timeline in relation to the event schedule confirmed the traditional “G’schirr und G’scherr” parade as a major crowd-puller. In 2024, around 12,500 guests attended this signature event. Analytics also enabled precise audience segmentation: particularly high interest was seen among attendees aged 30–39 and 50–69. These insights form the basis for targeted marketing and program development that speaks to the right audiences and sustains long-term engagement. In short, this data empowers the continuous evolution of the event without compromising its historical identity.
With mobility analytics, event organizers now have a cutting-edge tool at their disposal — one that seamlessly bridges tradition with innovation. It enables the continued success of the Bleiburg Wiesenmarkt, ensuring that it remains a cultural and economic highlight for years to come.
