Between Festive Lights and Operational Planning

German Christmas Markets 2025

German Christmas Markets 2025

Sparkling lights, contemplative Christmas music, and a lively buzz – these three elements define Christmas markets across Germany.
What the markets in Stuttgart, Erfurt, Cologne, Dortmund, Dresden, and Leipzig additionally have in common this year is their data-driven approach. Those responsible relied on robust visitor analyses to make decisions in a targeted, efficient, and impactful manner.

Stuttgart

Stuttgarter Nachrichten reported on the evaluation of the Stuttgart Christmas Market and drew a very positive conclusion to the season under the headline “Nothing but reason to celebrate.” More than three million visitors were counted in Stuttgart, an insight based on our visitor flow analysis. Data on peak times, length of stay, and regions of origin enable infrastructure, safety concepts, and visitor management to be aligned even more precisely in the future. The majority of visitors came from Germany, while international guests traveled primarily from Switzerland, with a growing number also coming from the United States.

Erfurt

Data analysis was also at the center of media coverage in Erfurt. In a detailed article, MDR summarized the key findings: With approximately 1.4 million visitors, the Erfurt Christmas Market has a strong regional focus. On December 6, the busiest day of the first week of December, around half of all visitors came from Erfurt itself or the immediate surrounding area. At the same time, the market attracts guests from neighboring cities as well as from abroad, including Switzerland, the United States, Poland, and India.

An analysis of the visitor structure in Erfurt reveals a clear dominance of young adults. The largest group consists of men aged 18 to 29, who spend an average of just over two hours at the market. The second-largest group comprises women between the ages of 40 and 49.

Visitors seeking a quieter experience are advised to visit the Erfurt Christmas Market before late afternoon, as peak attendance regularly occurs from late afternoon through the early evening.

Cologne, Dortmund, Dresden, and Leipzig

In addition to Stuttgart and Erfurt, we analyzed four further major Christmas markets, which were featured in a audio segment by WDR. These include the market at Cologne Cathedral, the Hansaplatz market in Dortmund, as well as the Christmas markets in Dresden and Leipzig. Here too, the data showed that visitors who prefer a more relaxed atmosphere are best advised to visit on weekdays, particularly Tuesdays and Thursdays, as visitor numbers increase significantly from Friday through Sunday.

In Cologne alone, 1.2 million visitors had already been recorded by early December. The majority of them spent more than two hours at the Christmas market. The catchment area was concentrated primarily in western North Rhine-Westphalia, with Aachen standing out in particular, contributing more than 25,000 visitors.

Over the same period, the Dortmund Christmas Market also recorded around one million visitors and attracted guests from beyond the borders of North Rhine-Westphalia. During the first week of December, five-digit visitor numbers traveled from the Münsterland and Sauerland regions. In addition, interactions between markets became apparent: around 5,000 residents of Dortmund visited the Christmas market at Cologne Cathedral, while approximately 1,000 visitors from Cologne attended the Hansaplatz market in Dortmund.

These empirical insights form the basis for efficient planning and make a decisive contribution to ensuring that traditional Christmas markets remain stable, safe, and well-managed even at high visitor volumes.
