APA: COVID-19 – Population almost in old mobility mode.APA:

To mark the start of school, Austria Presse Agentur (APA) asked our co-founder Michael Cik and A1 Head of Innovation Mario Mayerthaler to talk together. Against the backdrop of rising infection figures, the development of mobility in Austria since the end of the lockdown was discussed.

Before the lockdown, about 75 percent of the population traveled more than a kilometer on average every day, but during the Corona peak in March or April, this figure dropped to about 43 percent. Over the summer, mobility increased again to 72%, and increased another percentage point, to 73%, when school started.

While citizen* mobility numbers are moving to pre-crisis levels, the dip in tourist numbers is unchanged. Our mobility and roaming data show that this slump is most pronounced in Vienna. At Stephansplatz and Graben in Vienna’s Inner City, which are heavily influenced by tourism, the year-on-year decline is a significant 36 percent. International vacations usually account for around a third of passers-by there, but the figure is currently around 14 percent.
The number of international SIM cards dialled in shows that guests from Germany in particular are dropping out sharply. A September comparison shows that only about half as many German visitors as normal are present. Guests from countries such as Great Britain stay away almost completely, as shown by our analyses, which are based on the ‘Tourism Insights‘ product of several tourism regions in Austria.
