A1 Telekom Austria acquires majority stake

Founded in 2016 as a spin-off of Graz University of Technology and the Know-Center, we have been part of the A1 Start Up Campus since 2017 and have been able to use the infrastructure of one of the leading communications companies in the CEE region. In summer 2020, the A1 Group increased its shareholding to 51% in order to further strengthen the strategic cooperation.

With the “A1 Mobility Insights” platform, we rely on state-of-the-art algorithmic models, powerful big data technologies and artificial intelligence to create a new perspective on human movement from anonymized mobile signalling data.

The insights generated support companies from a wide range of industries, as well as public institutions, in optimizing processes, strengthening business and tourism locations, and even developing new data-driven business models – not only in times of the Corona crisis.

“As the A1 Telekom Austria Group, we rely on innovation as a strategic cornerstone and place a variety of priorities in the area of research and development. Our cooperation with the Styrian start-up Invenium is a good example of the use of innovative technologies from Austria and the successful expansion of an extensive digital ecosystem together with our partners from business and science. The resulting product “A1 Mobility Insights” has already proven helpful in the Corona crisis management and can now also hold its own in competition with the world’s largest providers by joining the HERE Marketplace. This cooperation is thus also a successful example of the important development of a European data economy,” says A1 Group CEO, Mag. Thomas Arnoldner.

“The Styrian competence centres, such as the Know-Center in particular, are engines for cooperation between science and business. They create an optimal environment so that forward-looking companies like Invenium can emerge,” says Minister for Economic Affairs and Research MMag.a Barbara Eibinger-Miedl, who emphasizes the central importance of this Styrian start-up: “Digitization offers new opportunities that we must use to master the current crisis and get back on the road to success. This is exactly where Invenium comes in and provides important insights that are highly relevant for tourism professionals, companies, regions and communities, for example.”

Dipl-Ing. Michael Cik, Founder and CSO of Invenium: “The entry of the A1 Telekom Austria Group in 2017, as well as the increase in the shareholding, are proof that we recognized a “need” early on with the analysis of transaction data and have been on the right track over the last few years. Moving the two companies even closer together gives us the opportunity to think even bigger and to carry out technological and organizational company developments even more effectively and efficiently, also internationally. I look forward to the intensive exchange and am confident about the future of A1 Mobility Insights.”

Univ.-Prof. Dr. Martin Fellendorf, Head of the Institute for Road and Traffic Engineering at Graz University of Technology, congratulates Invenium on the commercial success: “For a scientist, it is a special confirmation when the fundamental research started ten years ago with the integration of traffic models and mobile radio data as a new data source leads to a practical benefit.”

“As a COMET competence centre, the Know-Center sees it as its social responsibility to let funding money flow back into the location in the form of spin-offs. This enables us to optimally exploit research results and create jobs in a field of the future. Our vision is to found another ten spin-offs in the next ten years in order to advance the digital transformation in Austria. To achieve this, we are looking for investors who will go down this path with us,” says Univ.-Prof. Dipl.-Inf. Dr. Stefanie Lindstaedt, CEO Know-Center.

As a company of the A1 Telekom Austria Group, we are committed to maintaining the highest standards of data protection and information security and have taken extensive measures to ensure the security of our customers’ data. The movement analyses of A1 Mobility Insights are TÜV-certified and DSGVO-compliant.
