How is mobile data generated and what is done with it?
Every day, several million devices spread across thousands of radio masts dial into one of our partners’ mobile networks. As soon as a device connects to the mobile network via a radio mast, information is collected.
This information is collected anonymously on a daily basis and passed on to Invenium by partners. Invenium cleans and segments the raw data received using state-of-the-art algorithms, evaluates it and processes the data into detailed analyses of movement flows.

What are the advantages of this method?
The data is available on a daily basis; yesterday’s data can be viewed today. This provides new, up-to-date insights into the region on a daily basis in order to identify trends, react to changes and plan for the future.
Data can be collected and processed wherever there is cell phone reception, without leaving out large areas on the map. The analysis of mobile phone data allows a comprehensive insight into all guests, all relevant locations and all movement patterns every day of the year.
The mobile networks of our partners offer sufficient coverage and thus guarantee a very high flexibility in the region, in the geographical as well as in the temporal aspect. A mobility analysis is therefore possible in every region and can also be compared with previous analyses over long periods of time. This is particularly important in exceptional mobility situations, such as during the coronavirus pandemic.

How accurate is the data? What deviations can we assume, especially in the natural environment?
The number of mobile radio masts in the region determines the quality of the data. In this case, the higher the quantity, the higher the quality of the data. If there is no connection to the mobile network in a region, no data is received in this area.

How many POIs are useful for a tourist region? How is a region set up and how large/small can a POI be?
As the size of the selected POI is important for the accuracy of the result, the number and size of the POIs are always individually adapted to the region and the customer’s question. Specific estimates, questions and ideas are discussed in a personal meeting.

Is it possible to recognize the journey of international visitors?
Each SIM card has a country code, so the SIM card can be assigned to the respective country of origin. The exact journey on that day can be tracked as soon as the international guest connects to the national mobile network of our partners. In special cases, border crossings can be recognized and conclusions drawn about the previous journey.

Is it possible to track who visits several locations within a period of time?
In order to be able to trace a direct route, the guest must visit all the locations on the same day due to the 24-hour anonymization. These daily analyses can also be carried out retrospectively. This makes it possible, for example, to compare the number of visitors in the previous summer/winter with the current one.

For what period does it make sense to analyze the tourist locations in order to be able to make the right deductions?
For use in tourism, a duration of several months and the division of winter and summer locations is recommended – e.g. winter locations in the months of the winter season from December to April and summer locations from April to late fall. The longer selected duration enables in-depth comparisons of different weather conditions, daily and monthly comparisons. In addition, closures and seasonal closures can easily be taken into account in the dashboard.

Can the data be combined with tourism-relevant data (e.g. overnight stay statistics)?
Yes, the data can easily be blended with other statistics to individualize and optimize the results. The data is prepared in the dashboard for direct interpretation, but can also be exported for special analyses in the form of a PDF report.

How exactly are roaming users and users from other network providers recorded?
We always work with data from a network operator in which several providers offer their mobile services. The data generated from this is then extrapolated to the total population on the basis of regional market shares and structural data/statistics. External statistics (e.g. overnight stays, roaming contracts, etc.) and figures are used to generate accurate extrapolations.

What details can be read off the data?
On one hand, the tool creates a general overview of the region, but also provides deeper insights into the target group. The dashboard shows:
- Which sights are particularly popular.
- Which location attracts a particularly large number of day tourists.
- Understand the tourist flow in connection with traffic: how, from where and when my guests arrive.
- Socio-demographic information: to know the age and gender of my visitors.
- The origin of the international guests and which locations are popular among the international audience.
- The analysis of the chosen locations in relation to each other: to recognize which locations are visited consecutively and how different locations perform in different weather situations.

How is data protection handled?
In order to protect the privacy of individuals, the mobile phone data is collected anonymously, anonymized over time and aggregated so that individuals or small groups cannot be identified. Data protection is externally assessed, continuously updated, adapted and renewed. Our methodology is TÜV-certified and complies with the strictest data protection guidelines.

What are the usual (contract) terms for Tourism Insights and what is the price range?
Based on our experience to date, it can be concluded that a longer term makes sense in any case. With a longer runtime, the data already available can be used to make deductions for upcoming events. This makes it possible, for example, to better estimate resource requirements and thus support sustainable planning.
As the price depends on the desired offer, no exact figures can be given.
